Protec®
This advanced borosilicate glass fiber prefilter removes particulates and reduces bioburden in biological liquids to protect downstream membrane filters and equipment.
The Protec® RF microfiber glass filter is available in ratings of 0.5 µm or 1 µm. The Protec® RM is available in a choice of 0.2 µm, 0.3, µm, and 0.5 µm and combines an outer layer of microfiber glass filter media with an inner layer of Meissner’s proprietary hydrophilic PVDF membrane. Protec® filters provide consistent submicron contaminant removal with high dirt-holding capacity and high flow rates. The filter effectively protects downstream membrane filters and equipment. Protec® filters also are available in discs, capsules, high-capacity UltraCap®, and UltraCap® H.D. capsules.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Protec® Glass Microfiber Filter?
The Protec® Glass Microfiber Filter is a polypropylene glass microfiber prefilter designed to protect downstream sterilizing-grade filters. It features borosilicate glass fiber media available in single-layer (RF) or dual-layer (RM) configurations, combining glass microfiber with a hydrophilic SteriLUX® PVDF membrane. These filters provide consistent submicron contaminant removal, high dirt-holding capacity, and high flow rates, making them suitable for prefiltration and clarification in biopharmaceutical processes.
What applications is the Protec® Glass Microfiber Filter used for?
Protec® filters are ideal for clarification, prefiltration, and bioburden reduction in biological liquids such as serum, plasma fractions, blood products, vaccines, tissue and cell culture media, protein solutions, fermentation media and feeds, cell removal from fermentation broths, pre-column chromatography, and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
What specifications or sizes are available for the Protec® Glass Microfiber Filter?
Protec® filters come in two versions: RF with single-layer borosilicate glass microfiber media rated absolute 0.5 µmºm or 1 µmºm, and RM with dual-layer borosilicate glass microfiber plus SteriLUX® PVDF membrane rated absolute 0.2 µmºm, 0.3 µmºm, or 0.5 µmºm. Cartridge diameters are 2.75 inches (7 cm) with lengths of 10, 20, 30, or 40 inches (25, 50, 75, 100 cm). They have high microbial retention with log reduction values up to ‚â•7 for specific organisms.
What makes the Protec® Glass Microfiber Filter unique?
Protec® filters uniquely combine borosilicate glass microfiber media with a hydrophilic SteriLUX® PVDF membrane (in RM versions), offering high contaminant holding capacity and consistent submicron filtration. They provide excellent flow rates and filtration economics, use all-polypropylene support materials for broad chemical compatibility, and meet FDA food contact and USP Class VI standards. Their dual-layer design effectively removes colloids, proteins, lipids, and other particles to protect downstream sterile filters.
Are Protec® Glass Microfiber Filters suitable for regulated biopharmaceutical manufacturing?
Yes, Protec® filters are manufactured in conformance with cGMP and meet USP Class VI plastics requirements, including physicochemical, oxidizable substances, and cytotoxicity tests. All materials are FDA approved for food contact per 21 CFR 177. They are non-fiber-releasing as defined in 21 CFR 210.3(b)(6) and 211.72, making them suitable for regulated biopharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
What other products are commonly used with Protec® Glass Microfiber Filters?
Protec® filters are often used with upstream single-use systems such as Single-Use Systems, M-Flex® TPE Tubing, M-Sil™ Braid Reinforced Silicone Tubing, and BioFlex® Fluid Path Assemblies. Downstream, they complement products like the SGT (Single-Use Gauge Tee).
