Frequently Asked Questions
What are Disc Filters?
Disc filters are laboratory filtration devices designed to separate particles from liquids or gases. Meissner’s disc filters are manufactured using materials such as PES, PVDF, PTFE, polypropylene, polypropylene microfiber, and glass microfiber. They are used for analytical testing and scale-up evaluation in biopharmaceutical and laboratory settings.
What applications are Disc Filters used for?
Disc filters are used primarily for filtration in analytical and scale-up evaluation processes within biopharmaceutical manufacturing. They serve to remove particulates and contaminants from process fluids, ensuring sample clarity and integrity during laboratory testing and process development.

What specifications or sizes are available for Disc Filters?
Meissner’s disc filters are available in various membrane materials including PES, PVDF, PTFE, polypropylene, polypropylene microfiber, and glass microfiber. Specific sizes and pore ratings depend on the membrane type and application requirements, supporting both analytical and scale-up evaluations. Detailed size specifications should be obtained from product datasheets or technical support.
What makes Disc Filters unique?
Disc filters from Meissner are distinguished by their availability in multiple membrane materials suited for diverse filtration needs, including PES, PVDF, PTFE, polypropylene, and glass microfiber. This material variety allows compatibility with a wide range of solvents and process fluids, supporting both analytical precision and scale-up process development.
How do Disc Filters integrate with other systems?
Disc filters can be integrated into laboratory and pilot-scale filtration setups as part of fluid handling workflows. They are compatible with standard laboratory filtration apparatus and can be connected upstream or downstream of other single-use components to facilitate sample preparation, clarification, or sterile filtration steps within bioprocess workflows.
Are Disc Filters suitable for regulated biopharmaceutical manufacturing?
Yes, disc filters made from materials such as PES, PVDF, and PTFE are commonly used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing environments, including regulated settings. Their material composition supports chemical compatibility and filtration performance required for process development and analytical testing under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions.
What other products are commonly used with Disc Filters?
Disc filters are commonly used alongside upstream fluid handling and support products such as UltraClamp™ Sanitary Clamps and Universal Lab Stand. Downstream, they may be paired with monitoring components like the SGT (Single-Use Gauge Tee). Additionally, support equipment such as the Stainless Steel Stand for FlexFill® Biocontainers is used in conjunction with filtration workflows.
